Ciudad de Mar of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria town hall continues to carry out cleaning and maintenance work on the promenade and surroundings of the beach and pools of La Laja, with removal of sand that accumulates in the areas of passage due to the wind, as well as the waste left by bathers.
During the summer months, season of greater influx of bathers, the municipal operators have intensified these tasks. In this sense, during the summer period, they take five times a week, during an average of three hours, to remove the sand that the wind deposits in the walk and that varies according to the weather conditions. Although it is possible to act in a punctual zone, there are occasions in which performances of about 300 linear meters are carried out.
The uniqueness of this cleaning is that no machinery can be used and everything must be done by hand, using a brush, shovel and hand truck. This is because the use of mechanical uses in La Laja is complicated because it is not a compact sand, especially in the south wing, which can lead to the sinking of the tractor. However, a recent performance with the beach cleaning service retro-shovel was performed to lower the level of sand in this area.
Artificial sand dunes - vegetables
Currently, from the City of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria with the help of the Demarcation of Coasts is working on the creation of artificial-plant dunes, using plants suitable for the natural environment and salt conditions, so that they can contain the current volume of sand poured over the passage, which is much higher than in previous years.
It is also stated that this measure would give results in six months to a year and that, in the long run, would be the solution that would generate less environmental impact.
