Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is preparing to live on Friday, June 23, the most magical night of the year, in which traditional fireworks and music will mark the program of the Night of San Juan. For this occasion, the City Council has designed a special device that guarantees the safety of all attendees, cleaning in the area and that public transport can be used on the trips to Playa de Las Canteras, which once again is The epicenter of the party.
Starting at 10:00 p.m., the party starts at Las Canteras beach, which will be interrupted at 24.00 p.m. to give way to the fireworks show, although the concerts will then be continued until 2.30 p.m.
These are the key hours of a special night for Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, where more than a hundred thousand people are expected to be present in the Las Canteras area, so that the City Council will reinforce basic services that will allow a Greater enjoyment of the party and that the next day, Saturday, June 24, the beach looks just as clean and clear as ever.
Once the institutional event of the Fiestasd Fundacionales, which will be held this year at the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium, will be taken to the street and four hours and a half of music will begin at Las Canteras Beach, at Saulo Square Toron, where the groups Viltown, Neo Pinto and Mondo Diávolo will perform.
At 24.00 hours will arrive one of the most anticipated moments of the year, with the start of fireworks, which will once again illuminate the sky of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria with about 241 kilos of gunpowder thrown from the square of La Lace. In addition, a large sign measuring 30 meters wide with 'San Juan 2017' will be visible to all who come to the epicenter of the party
Security
It is expected that this year, according to the forecasts of previous editions, more than one hundred thousand people come to watch the fires and actions on the beach, so the City has prepared a special security deployment to ensure that everything runs smoothly.
The Local Police will carry out a specific deployment for the beach of Las Canteras and its surroundings, with a total of 138 agents, of which 53 will reinforce security in the afternoon, while from 22.00 hours 85 agents are added to the surveillance Of the Beach, 52 of them of the GOIA.
Added to this deployment are a total of 18 firefighters, most of whom will be located in the area of La Puntilla closest to the burning of the fireworks, and 35 members of Civil Protection.
Due to the expected high tide by 2:00 p.m. that night, several members of Civil Protection will be deployed at various points on the beach where the tide usually reaches the wall of the Paseo to warn people that Are still in the sand that is recommended to be stored on the avenue or in an area of dry sand.
The City Council requests in a very special way the collaboration of all to prevent the sea from carrying part of the waste due to this high tide, which will occur less than two hours after the fireworks.
To this municipal device will also join several groups of the UIP and UPR of the National Police, as well as members of the GEAS of the Civil Guard, who will patrol the waters of the bay of Las Canteras with a pneumatic boat in case it is necessary to rescue some Bather that night.
The Red Cross will also have the usual boat that they use on the beach prepared in case a rescue is necessary. In addition, it will deploy four ambulances from 10.00 pm to 4.00 am in several strategic points of the Paseo de Las Canteras, in case it is necessary to evacuate someone.
This year, and taking into account the level of security alert that governs throughout the country, structural protection elements (mainly trucks and vehicles of different municipal services) will be included in the main pedestrian access to the beach and in the courts Of traffic.
Street cuts
As it has been done since 2015, Calle Albareda will be cut to traffic from 21.00 hours, and only the vehicles of Municipal Guaguas and emergency vehicles will be allowed to circulate through it. The access will also be cut from Juan Rejón to Avenida Marítima through Calle Lopez Socas (next to the Port Market).
The Local Police, however, plans to cut Juan Rejón to the height of the Ice Factory if the conditions of the traffic demanded it. Vehicles that want to leave La Isleta after these cuts will have to go to Manuel Becerra on La Naval street and from there take the avenue Marítima. Likewise, those who want to enter La Isleta will have to do it through Belén María and Manuel Becerra, or through the Sebadal or the tunnel of Pérez Muñoz.
