Las Palmas de Gran Canaria recovers this Saturday in La Cícer the celebration of World Surfing Day

The City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and the Association of Surfing Schools of Gran Canaria, will celebrate next Saturday, June 30, the World Surfing Day with a day dedicated to this sport on the beach of Las Canteras. The capital, the main urban destination of the Canarian Archipelago, has become a surfing reference and is, together with Donostia - San Sebastián, one of the only two Spanish cities of the World Network of Surf Cities.

The World Surfing Day is a day that recovers in the city and has the support of the Department of City of Sea and the Municipal Institute of Sports, to further visualize some sports, those of surfing, surfing, bodyboarding , canoeing and paddle surfing, which have managed to significantly boost the neighborhood of Guanarteme and Playa de Las Canteras. The City of Mar Councilman, José Eduardo Ramírez, and the Councilor for New Technologies and Sports, Aridany Romero, presented today at the beach this celebration that revalues Las Palmas de Gran Canaria as a destination for sportsmen and surfers.

The program of events includes team surfing competition, surfing initiation activity, surf-yoga days, exhibition tents for companies and associations linked to the sector. Food trucks, zumba and live music will complete a day aimed not only at surfing fans but at all families.

The 2018 Surfing Day in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has programmed a new surfing championship, SIX Total, a team competition of 6 people. Three of them will compete with surfboards, two others will do it with body boards and the last one with a longboard. The different sleeves will be developed in the area of La Cícer with the participation of a maximum of 16 teams. Each group will have 15 minutes in the water and will score both the best waves (60 points) and the staging and expression (10 points). The competition will start at 12.00.

The Surfing Day was established by the prestigious Surfing magazine and the Surfrider Foundation, in 2004. It is a worldwide celebration of the sport of surfing. On this day, events and activities related to surfing are organized around the world. The surfers also use this day to give back to the environment what they receive through the organization of beach cleaning and other activities of awareness, conservation and protection.
